What is the COVID-19 PILL? The COVID-19 pill, PAXLOVID, is a new treatment for COVID-19 that can be taken at home after experiencing mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms. The Pfizer COVID-19 Pill, PAXLOVID, is FDA authorized and currently one of the two COVID medications that can be taken at home, rather than in the hospital. Paxlovid is taken twice daily for 5 days of onset of COVID symptoms. Three pills are taken twice daily for a total of 5 days. A Paxlovid kit contains 30 tablets divided in 5 daily-dose blister cards. HOW DOES THE COVID-19 PILL WORK? Paxlovid is an antiviral that blocks SARS-CoV-2 virus replication. Without being able to replicate, the COVID-19 vaccine dies. If you are within 5 days of experiencing mild to moderate COVID symptoms, are confirmed to be COVD-19 positive via PCR or rapid antigen test, are deemed to be high risk, and have had a physical examination with kidney functions within the last 12 months from a physician then our provider can prescribe you Paxlovid to take at home. What are early symptoms of COVID-19 infection? Usually it starts with a fever, followed by a cough and muscle pain. How long does it take for COVID-19 symptoms to start showing? It takes about 2-14 days after COVID virus exposure. How effective is the COVID-19 pill? Paxlovid is an effective treatment and shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization or death by 89%. Please note that Paxlovid is not a substitute for the vaccine and vaccinated patients who receive this medications will likely have even better recovery outcomes than those who are unvaccinated.
